How Long Does It Take to Build a Web App? A Realistic Timeline

"A few weeks" is rarely true. Here’s what actually determines your timeline, phase by phase.

How Long Does It Take to Build a Web App? A Realistic Timeline

Timeline questions come right after budget questions, and the honest answer has more moving parts than a single number can convey.

The four phases, roughly

  • Scoping & design (1–3 weeks) — locking down what you’re actually building before any code gets written
  • Core build (4–10 weeks) — the bulk of engineering time, driven entirely by feature count and complexity
  • Testing & polish (1–3 weeks) — the phase most external quotes quietly underestimate
  • Launch & stabilization (ongoing) — the first few weeks post-launch always surface something real usage catches that testing didn’t

What actually extends timelines

Scope changing mid-build is the single biggest cause. Close behind it: waiting on third-party approvals like payment processors or app store review, and content or assets not being ready exactly when engineering needs them.

How to keep your timeline honest

Lock scope before development starts. Treat "nice to haves" as a v2 list, not a v1 requirement. And build in a real buffer for testing — it isn’t optional padding, it’s where most bugs actually get caught before your customers do.

We quote timelines in phases, not one number, so you know exactly what’s driving the date — and what would move it.
