Technical SEO Checklist for 2026: What Actually Moves Rankings
Most technical SEO advice online is outdated or irrelevant. Here’s what genuinely affects rankings in 2026 — in order of impact.

A lot of SEO advice circulating online is recycled from a decade ago. Here’s what actually still matters, roughly in order of impact.
Core Web Vitals are non-negotiable
Google’s ranking system weighs real page experience — loading speed, interaction responsiveness, visual stability — directly. A slow, janky site is fighting an uphill battle against a fast one with equivalent content.
The checklist, in priority order
- Crawlability — a correct robots.txt and a sitemap.xml actually submitted to Search Console
- Mobile-first indexing — your mobile site is your site, as far as Google is concerned
- Core Web Vitals — optimized images, lazy loading, and minimal render-blocking JavaScript
- Structured data / schema markup for eligibility in rich results
- Internal linking that actually routes authority toward the pages you want to rank
- HTTPS everywhere with zero mixed-content warnings
What doesn’t matter as much anymore
Keyword density stuffing, exact-match domains, and the meta keywords tag — all functionally ignored by modern search algorithms, regardless of what older guides still claim.
Technical SEO is a foundation, not a silver bullet. Content and backlinks still do the heavy lifting — but a technically broken site puts a hard ceiling on how far either one can take you.
